The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the PP2C family of Ser/Thr protein phosphatases, known to negatively regulate cell stress response pathways.
PPM1B has been shown to dephosphorylate cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs), suggesting a role in cell cycle control.
Overexpression may lead to cell-growth arrest or cell death.
Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms; additional variants exist but do not represent full-length sequences.
