Target Information
The PER3 gene belongs to the Period family and is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the primary circadian pacemaker of the mammalian brain. This gene encodes components involved in circadian rhythms of locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior. It is upregulated by CLOCK/ARNTL heterodimers and subsequently represses this upregulation via PER/CRY heterodimers. Polymorphisms in PER3 have been associated with sleep disorders. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms exist.
