Target Information
Junctional complexes between the plasma membrane (PM) and endoplasmic/sarcoplasmic reticulum (ER/SR) are essential for communication between surface and intracellular ion channels. Junctophilins (JPs) are key components of these complexes.
JPH1 is expressed in skeletal muscle, JPH2 in all muscle types, and JPH3/JPH4 predominantly in the brain. In the CNS, JPH3 and JPH4 contribute to subsurface cistern formation in neurons.
Mice lacking both JPH3 and JPH4 show impaired learning and memory with abnormal nervous functions. A repeat expansion in JPH3 is associated with Huntington disease-like 2. At least two isoforms of JPH3 are known.
