Target Information

BID is a death agonist that heterodimerizes with either agonist BAX or antagonist BCL2. It belongs to the BCL-2 family of cell death regulators. BID mediates mitochondrial damage induced by caspase-8 (CASP8), which cleaves this protein, allowing the COOH-terminal fragment to translocate to mitochondria and trigger cytochrome c release.
In normal cells, BID exists in an inactive cytosolic form and is activated by caspase 8 in response to TNF alpha or Fas ligand. The cleaved C-terminal 15 kDa fragment (p15) translocates to mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. BID thus serves as a molecular link between caspase 8 activation and mitochondrial death machinery.
