Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the E2F family of transcription factors. The E2F family plays a crucial role in cell cycle control and tumor suppressor protein function, and is a target of transforming proteins from small DNA tumor viruses. E2F proteins contain conserved domains, including DNA binding, dimerization, transactivation, and tumor suppressor association domains. E2F1, along with E2F2 and E2F3, possesses an additional cyclin-binding domain and interacts preferentially with retinoblastoma protein (pRB) in a cell-cycle dependent manner, mediating both cell proliferation and p53-dependent/independent apoptosis.
