Target Information
Desmin (approximately 53 kDa) exhibits a high degree of tissue specificity, being predominantly expressed in muscle cells (cardiac, skeletal, and smooth). Its expression is stage- and tissue-specific, induced during terminal development such as skeletal muscle differentiation. In skeletal and cardiac muscle cells, desmin localizes at the Z-disk and intercalated disk regions, while in smooth muscle its expression pattern is more heterogeneous. Coexpression of vimentin and desmin has been observed in muscle-derived tumors such as rhabdomyosarcomas and leiomyosarcomas. Altered desmin distribution has also been noted during myocardial dysfunction.
