Background

Ribosomes are organelles responsible for protein synthesis, composed of small (40S) and large (60S) subunits. The S6 protein, part of the 40S subunit, belongs to the S6E family and is a major substrate for ribosomal protein kinases. It undergoes phosphorylation on multiple serine residues in response to growth factors, mitogens, and tumor-promoting agents, while dephosphorylation occurs during growth arrest. This phosphorylation event is linked to the regulation of cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes.
