Target Information

The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains green fluorescent protein (GFP Tag) that emits light in bioluminescence reactions. GFP is widely used as a reporter protein for gene expression in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, and as a protein tag in cell culture and multicellular organisms.

As a fusion tag, GFP allows visualization of protein localization, movement, and dynamics of subcellular compartments. GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that autocatalytically forms a fluorescent pigment, absorbing blue light (395 nm) and emitting green light (508 nm). Its fluorescence is stable and species-independent, suitable for diverse applications such as monitoring gene expression, protein localization, protein-protein interactions (yeast two-hybrid system), and FRET experiments.
