SIRT5 is a member of the sirtuin (Sir2-like) protein family found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
These proteins share a conserved sirtuin core domain and are involved in NAD metabolism.
Sirtuins may function as mono-ADP-ribosyltransferases, and some reports suggest a link between NAD metabolism and histone deacetylation, indicating a potential reciprocal activation mechanism involving NAD and acetylated histones.
