Target Information

Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are a family of closely related growth factors characterized by eight conserved cysteine residues and common VEGF receptors. VEGFs stimulate endothelial cells, induce angiogenesis, promote cell migration, increase vascular permeability, and inhibit apoptosis.
VEGFB shares structural similarity with VEGF and PIGF and is often co-expressed with VEGF. Two isoforms exist: VEGFB 167 (heparin-binding, cell-associated) and VEGFB 186 (secreted).
VEGFB stimulates endothelial cell proliferation and binds specifically to VEGFR1 (flt1), not VEGFR2. It is widely expressed, especially in heart, skeletal muscle, and pancreas. VEGFB expression in human primary breast cancers has been linked to lymph node metastasis.
The VEGFB gene is mapped to chromosome 11q13.
