Target Information
BCL-2 is a key regulator of apoptosis that functions to either inhibit or promote cell death. Members of the BCL-2 family can dimerize to modulate apoptotic pathways. For example, Bag1 forms a heterodimer with BCL-2, enhancing its anti-apoptotic effect. Conversely, Bax and Bak promote cytochrome c release from mitochondria, initiating apoptosis. Constitutive expression of BCL-2, such as translocation to the Ig heavy chain locus, is associated with follicular lymphoma. Overexpression of BCL-2 has been linked to cancers including B-cell lymphoma and prostate cancer. Two transcript variants of BCL-2 differ in their C-terminal sequences due to alternate splicing.
