Target Information
TET1 is a dioxygenase that specifically binds methylcytosine (5mC), a minor base in mammalian DNA crucial for retrotransposon silencing and development. It catalyzes the conversion of 5mC to 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (hmC). The function of hmC remains unclear but may affect chromatin structure, recruit specific factors, or act as an intermediate in cytosine demethylation. hmC is present in ES cells and enriched in the brain, notably in Purkinje neurons, and may play a role in fetal development of the heart, lung, and brain.
