Target Information
MAOB (Monoamine Oxidase B), also known as MAO, BRAIN, or Amine Oxidase (Flavin-Containing) B, is a protein encoded by the MAOB gene in humans. It belongs to the flavin monoamine oxidase family and is located on chromosome Xp11.3.
MAOB catalyzes the oxidative deamination of biogenic and xenobiotic amines, playing a key role in the metabolism of neuroactive and vasoactive amines in the central and peripheral nervous systems. It preferentially degrades benzylamine and phenylethylamine and also acts on dopamine. Inhibition of MAO-B increases dopamine activity and reduces hydrogen peroxide production, which is associated with reactive oxygen species.
