Target Information
Poliovirus is a single-stranded RNA virus belonging to the Picornavirus family, characterized by a small RNA genome (7.2 kb to 8.5 kb). It is an enterovirus that primarily infects the gastrointestinal-associated lymphoid tissue (GALT) and can spread to the central nervous system, causing paralysis. Mortality, though rare, is usually due to respiratory failure from paralysis of the intercostal muscles and diaphragm. There are three distinct types of the virus: Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3.
