Target Information
Megsin (SerpinB7, TP55) is a 380 amino acid cytoplasmic protein predominantly expressed in mesangial cells, which maintain glomerular structure and function. As a member of the serpin family, megsin acts as a serine protease inhibitor that may inactivate MMP-2, MMP-9, and plasmin—key enzymes responsible for extracellular matrix degradation. Overexpression of megsin increases mesangial cell number and matrix expansion, accompanied by immune complex deposition, suggesting involvement in renal pathologies.
