Target Information
POU5F1, commonly known as Oct-4, is a maternally expressed octamer-binding protein and the first transcription factor described for early development. Its role in embryonic development suggests utility in creating stem cells for cell replacement therapies in degenerative diseases. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be generated by expressing POU5F1 with Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc in mouse fibroblasts. Recent experiments show iPS cells can be produced using plasmids expressing these factors, eliminating viral introduction and improving safety for regenerative medicine applications.
