Target Information
GDF-15 belongs to the TGF-beta cytokine family, which plays an important role in prenatal development, postnatal growth, and tissue remodeling. It is predominantly expressed in the placenta and to a lesser extent in other tissues. Elevated levels of GDF-15 in amniotic fluid and sera of pregnant women suggest its involvement in gestation and embryonic development. GDF-15 exhibits tumor suppressive activities and is produced in response to activation of the p53 pathway. Serum levels are positively correlated with progression of certain cancers, including colorectal, pancreatic, and prostate tumors.
