Target Information
XBP1 encodes a transcription factor that regulates MHC class II genes by binding to a promoter element referred to as an X box. This bZIP protein also acts as a transcription factor binding to enhancers in the T cell leukemia virus type 1 promoter. It may enhance viral protein expression by partnering with a viral transactivator.
During endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, XBP1 mRNA undergoes unconventional splicing mediated by IRE1, removing 26 nucleotides to produce the active isoform XBP1(S). The unspliced isoform XBP1(U) is constitutively expressed and functions as a negative feedback regulator of XBP1(S), suppressing transcription of target genes during ER stress recovery. A pseudogene of XBP1 is localized to chromosome 5.
