Target Information
Melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) proteins are silent in normal tissues except for male germ cells and, for some members, placenta. These antigens are tumor-specific and expressed in various types of tumor cells. Due to their selective expression, MAGE antigens are of particular interest for antitumor immunotherapy. Genes of the MAGE family encode tumor antigens recognized by cytolytic T lymphocytes on human melanoma cells. Although the function of MAGE is not fully understood, it may play a role in embryonic development, tumor transformation, or progression.
