RET는 캐드헤린 슈퍼패밀리에 속하는 수용체 티로신 키나아제로 신경능선 발달에 중요한 역할을 합니다. RET는 세포 성장 및 분화 신호를 전달하며, 유전자 변이는 다발성 내분비종양(MEN) IIA 및 IIB, 히르슈스프룽병, 수질성 갑상선암 등과 관련되어 있습니다. RET 유전자는 서로 다른 아이소폼을 암호화하는 두 개의 전사 변이체를 가지며, 추가적인 변이체들도 보고된 바 있으나 생물학적 유효성은 확정되지 않았습니다.
