Target Information

NANOG (Nanog homeobox) is a divergent homeodomain protein that regulates pluripotency and differentiation of undifferentiated embryonic stem cells. NANOG mRNA is expressed in pluripotent mouse and human cell lines and absent from differentiated cells. Human NANOG shares 52% overall amino acid identity with mouse NANOG and 85% identity within the homeodomain.
Human NANOG maps to gene locus 12p13.31, while mouse NANOG maps to 6 F2.
Research indicates that NANOG expression is high in undifferentiated N-Tera embryonal carcinoma cells and plays a key role in cell proliferation and self-renewal.
NANOG, together with transcription factors such as Oct-4 (POU5F1), Sox2, Klf4, Lin28, and c-Myc, contributes to the generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, offering potential applications in regenerative medicine and treatment of degenerative diseases.
