Target Information
SUMO1 is a ubiquitin-like protein that can be covalently attached to proteins as a monomer or as lysine-linked polymers. This modification requires activation by the E1 complex (SAE1-SAE2), conjugation via the E2 enzyme UBE2I, and can be facilitated by E3 ligases such as PIAS1–4, RANBP2, or CBX4.
SUMO1 modification plays a key role in cellular processes including nuclear transport, DNA replication and repair, mitosis, and signal transduction. It is involved in targeting RANGAP1 to the nuclear pore complex protein RANBP2. Polymeric SUMO1 chains are susceptible to polyubiquitination, signaling for proteasomal degradation.
SUMO1 may also regulate gene networks involved in palate development, and mutations in this gene can cause non-syndromic orofacial cleft 10.
