PGP9.5는 유비퀴틴 가수분해 효소 및 리가아제 활성을 가지며, 신경계 전반의 뉴런 및 신경섬유, 신경내분비세포, 신장 세뇨관 일부, 정세포 및 Leydig 세포, 난자, 황체 세포 등에서 발현됩니다.
PGP9.5의 과발현은 비소세포성 폐암과 관련되고, 발현 감소는 헌팅턴병 및 알츠하이머병과 연관됩니다. 따라서 PGP9.5는 신경세포 표지 및 파킨슨병 등 신경퇴행성 질환 연구에 유용한 표지자로 활용됩니다.
