Specificity: This antibody is specific for human CD81, which is expressed on most tissues with the exception of red blood cells and platelets.

Target Information

CD81 (TAPA-1, target of anti-proliferative antibody-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family, expressed on virtually all nucleated cells, especially germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with tetraspanin proteins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscles, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance and serves as a receptor for the hepatitis C virus. CD81 is a cell surface glycoprotein that complexes with integrins and associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, acting as a receptor for HCV E2 envelope protein. Antibodies to CD81 have antiproliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines, particularly large cell lymphomas. CD81 is also localized in a tumor-suppressor gene region and is a candidate gene for malignancies.
