Target Information
Apolipoprotein B mRNA-editing enzyme catalytic polypeptide-like 3 (APOBEC3) is a member of the cytidine deaminase family that acts on monomeric nucleoside and nucleotide substrates. APOBEC3G and APOBEC3F play key roles in cellular defense against retroviral infection by inducing hypermutation in viral DNA, thereby destabilizing the viral genome. This antiviral mechanism is counteracted by the HIV-1 Vif protein, which promotes APOBEC3G degradation. A single amino acid substitution (D128K) can block APOBEC3G depletion without affecting its inhibitory activity.
