Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitoribosomes consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with a higher protein-to-rRNA ratio (approximately 75%) compared to prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The protein encoded by this gene is part of the 28S subunit and is involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and IFN-γ. It may bind ATP/GTP and interact functionally with mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein. Pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
