Target Information
DNA methylation, the addition of methyl groups to cytosine bases in CpG dinucleotides, regulates gene expression and is crucial for proper development. MBD4 (also known as MED1) is a mammalian demethylase with a methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD) and is involved in DNA demethylation by cleaving methyl groups as methanol.
MBD family proteins (MeCP2, MBD1, MBD2, MBD3, MBD4) have distinct roles in transcriptional repression and DNA methylation signaling. MBD4 shows homology to bacterial DNA N-glycosylases/lyases and is sometimes mutated in microsatellite unstable tumors.
