Target Information
ULBP1 is the ligand for the NKG2D receptor, together with at least ULBP2 and ULBP3.
ULBPs activate multiple signaling pathways in primary NK cells, resulting in cytokine and chemokine production.
Binding of ULBP ligands to NKG2D induces calcium mobilization and activation of JAK2, STAT5, ERK, and PI3K/Akt pathways.
In CMV-infected cells, ULBP1 interacts with soluble CMV glycoprotein UL16.
This interaction blocks NKG2D binding, allowing CMV-infected cells to evade immune detection.
UL16 also retains ULBP1 in the ER and cis-Golgi, preventing its surface expression.
