The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily.
ABC proteins transport various molecules across extra- and intra-cellular membranes.
ABC genes are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
This full transporter is a member of the MRP subfamily, involved in multidrug resistance.
It functions as a multispecific organic anion transporter with substrates including oxidized glutathione, cysteinyl leukotrienes, and activated aflatoxin B1.
It also transports glucuronides and sulfate conjugates of steroid hormones and bile salts.
Alternative splicing by exon deletion results in several splice variants maintaining the original open reading frame.
