Rubella virus는 1962년 Parkman과 Weller에 의해 처음 분리되었습니다. Rubella virus는 Togavirus 과, Rubivirus 속에 속하며, Eastern 및 Western Equine Encephalitis virus와 같은 group A arbovirus와 가장 밀접한 관련이 있습니다. 이 바이러스는 외피를 가진 RNA 바이러스로, 단일 항원형을 가지며 다른 togavirus 구성원과 교차 반응하지 않습니다. Rubella virus는 비교적 불안정하며, 지질 용매, 트립신, 포르말린, 자외선, 낮은 pH, 열, amantadine 등에 의해 불활성화됩니다.
