Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family, crucial for signal transduction and T cell differentiation.
CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with TCR for MHC-I molecules.
It is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as CD8α homodimers.
Upon MHC-I/peptide complex binding, CD8 recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs play key roles in pathogen and tumor cell clearance. Differentiation of naive CD8+ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
