Target Information

The WRN gene encodes a member of the RecQ and DEAH subfamilies of DNA and RNA helicases. These enzymes play key roles in DNA metabolism, including transcription, replication, recombination, and repair.
The protein contains a nuclear localization signal in the C-terminus and localizes predominantly to the nucleolus. It possesses intrinsic 3′ to 5′ DNA helicase and exonuclease activities.
Interactions with the Ku70/80 heterodimer suggest involvement in double-strand DNA break repair.
Mutations in this gene cause Werner syndrome, an autosomal recessive disorder characterized by premature aging.
