Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene regulates pancreatic beta-cell function and is highly similar to mouse JIP-1, a regulator of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (MAPK8). It inhibits MAPK8-mediated activation of transcription factors and reduces IL-1β and MEKK1-induced apoptosis in pancreatic beta cells. Additionally, it functions as a DNA-binding transactivator of the glucose transporter GLUT2. REST is known to repress expression of this gene in insulin-secreting beta cells. Mutations have been associated with type 2 diabetes susceptibility.
