Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family, essential for T cell signal transduction, differentiation, and activation. CD8 is primarily expressed on T cells as a CD8α/β heterodimer, functioning as a co-receptor with the T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules. The CD8α chain is critical for MHC-I binding and can also form homodimers expressed on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells. Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes recruits Lck kinase, leading to cytokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs play a key role in pathogen and tumor cell clearance, with differentiation enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
