Target Information

Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin receptor family. It plays a critical role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation.
CD8 is predominantly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α and CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with T cell receptor (TCR) for MHC class I molecules.
The CD8α chain is essential for MHC-I binding and is also expressed as homodimers on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells.
Engagement of MHC-I/peptide complexes triggers recruitment of Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation.
Activated CTLs play a key role in eliminating pathogens and tumor cells. Differentiation of naïve CD8⁺ T cells into CTLs is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
