Target Information
ASCL1 (also known as ASH1) is a basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor essential for early nervous system development. It is expressed in fetal brain and is crucial for the formation and survival of autonomic neurons. ASCL1 interacts with MEF-2A to regulate gene expression involved in neuronal circuit formation. Elevated ASCL1 expression is observed in neuroendocrine tumors such as medullary thyroid cancer and small cell lung cancer, making it a useful marker for cancers with neuroendocrine features. The ASCL1 gene is located on human chromosome 12 and contains a trinucleotide repeat region, potentially linked to inherited diseases.
