Target Information
Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT) catalyzes the transfer of a methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine to catecholamines, including neurotransmitters such as dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine. This O-methylation represents a major degradative pathway for catecholamine transmitters.
COMT also plays a role in the metabolism of catechol drugs used to treat hypertension, asthma, and Parkinson’s disease. It exists in two forms in tissues: soluble (S-COMT) and membrane-bound (MB-COMT), differing at their N-termini. Several transcript variants are produced via alternative translation initiation sites and promoters.
