Target Information
The IL-16 protein is a pleiotropic cytokine functioning as a chemoattractant, modulator of T cell activation, and inhibitor of HIV replication. Its signaling is mediated by CD4. Proteolytic processing yields two functional proteins: the C-terminal peptide (cytokine function) and the N-terminal product (potential role in cell cycle control). Caspase 3 is involved in its proteolytic processing. Alternate splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
