Sheep anti-human transferrin antibody recognizes human transferrin, an approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoprotein synthesized by the liver. This protein contains two specific high-affinity iron (Fe³⁺) binding sites and is responsible for the transport and supply of an exchangeable pool of iron through binding to cell surface transferrin receptors.
Target Information
Transferrins (Tf) are approximately 80 kDa blood plasma glycoproteins synthesized by the liver. They are iron-binding transport proteins that can bind two Fe³⁺ ions along with an anion, usually bicarbonate. Transferrin transports iron from absorption and heme degradation sites to storage and utilization sites. It is the primary blood iron transport protein, with about one-third of total transferrin bound to iron under normal conditions. Measurement of blood transferrin levels can indicate iron-carrying capacity and abnormalities such as anemia, iron overload, and hemochromatosis. Serum transferrin may also play a role in stimulating cell proliferation.
