Target Information
This gene is a member of the natriuretic peptide family and encodes a secreted protein functioning as a cardiac hormone. The protein undergoes two cleavage events, one intracellularly and another after secretion into the blood. Its biological actions include natriuresis, diuresis, vasorelaxation, inhibition of renin and aldosterone secretion, and maintenance of cardiovascular homeostasis. Elevated levels of this protein in the bloodstream are indicative of heart failure. Mutations have been associated with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
