Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the fibroblast growth factor (FGF) family. FGF family members possess broad mitogenic and cell survival activities and are involved in biological processes such as embryonic development, cell growth, morphogenesis, tissue repair, tumor growth, and invasion.
FGF23 inhibits renal tubular phosphate transport. Mutations in this gene are associated with autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets, an inherited phosphate-wasting disorder. Abnormally high expression levels are found in oncogenic hypophosphatemic osteomalacia, a disease characterized by abnormal phosphate metabolism. Mutations also cause familial tumoral calcinosis with hyperphosphatemia.
