Target Information
CD14 is a 55 kDa GPI-anchored glycoprotein expressed on mature monocytes, macrophages, and neutrophils. It functions as a multifunctional lipopolysaccharide receptor and is released into serum as both secreted and cleaved forms. CD14 binds lipopolysaccharide (LPS) via LBP, an acute-phase serum protein. Soluble sCD14 can recognize subtle structural differences in LPS and plays a role in neutralizing serum lipopolysaccharides. Additionally, CD14 binds apoptotic cells and is involved in allergic, inflammatory, and infectious processes. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants encoding the same isoform.
Diseases associated with CD14 dysfunction include Mycobacterium chelonae infection and Croup.
