Target Information
Opsins are members of the guanine nucleotide-binding protein (G protein)-coupled receptor superfamily.
In addition to the visual opsins, mammals possess several photoreceptive non-visual opsins expressed in extraocular tissues.
Opsin 3 (OPN3) is:
- Strongly expressed in brain and testis
- Weakly expressed in liver, placenta, heart, lung, skeletal muscle, kidney, and pancreas
- Possibly expressed in the retina
- May play a role in encephalic photoreception
Highly expressed in the preoptic area and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus, and shows patterned expression in cerebral cortex, cerebellar Purkinje cells, striatal neurons, thalamic nuclei, and spinal interneurons.
