Target Information
FTH1 is the heavy subunit of ferritin, the major intracellular iron storage protein in prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It consists of 24 subunits of heavy and light ferritin chains. Variation in ferritin subunit composition may influence iron uptake and release rates in different tissues. The main role of ferritin is to store iron in a soluble and nontoxic form. Defects in ferritin proteins are associated with several neurodegenerative diseases. This gene has multiple pseudogenes and alternatively spliced transcript variants, though their biological validity remains undetermined.
