Target Information
SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2), also known as 2019-nCoV, causes illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to severe respiratory distress and death. The CoV Spike (S) protein is crucial for viral attachment, fusion, and entry, and serves as a key target for antibody, entry inhibitor, and vaccine development.
The Spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD, S-RBD) binds strongly to human and bat ACE2 receptors. SARS-CoV-2 RBD shows significantly higher binding affinity to ACE2 compared to SARS-CoV RBD. The S1 subunit contains this RBD, which specifically interacts with ACE2 receptors on target cells.
