Background
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and participate in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack 5S rRNA. The proteins composing mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, often hindering recognition by sequence homology. This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein belonging to the ribosomal protein S2 family. Alternatively spliced transcript variants have been observed for this gene. (RefSeq, May 2012)
