Background
Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. These proteins belong to the GPCR family and share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. The nomenclature assigned to these genes and proteins is independent across species. This particular olfactory receptor gene is a segregating pseudogene, where some individuals possess a functional allele, while others have a nonfunctional variant.
