Background

This gene encodes a cytokine receptor that specifically binds interleukin-15 (IL15) with high affinity. IL15 and IL2 receptors share two subunits (IL2Rβ and IL2Rγ), which explains their overlapping biological activities. IL15RA differs from IL2RA in that it can bind IL15 independently, suggesting distinct roles for IL15 and IL2. This receptor enhances cell proliferation and upregulates anti-apoptotic proteins such as BCL2L1/BCL2-XL and BCL2. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants have been identified (RefSeq, Apr 2010).
