Background
Olfactory receptor family 5 subfamily M member 1 (OR5M1) is a human olfactory receptor that interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses responsible for smell perception. These proteins belong to the G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) family, characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure shared with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. They play a key role in odorant recognition and signal transduction via G proteins. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. The nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is independent across species.
