Target Information
Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV) is a member of the Herpesviridae family. HSV-1 and HSV-2, also known as Human herpesvirus 1 and 2 (HHV-1 and HHV-2), are highly contagious to humans.
- HSV-1 typically causes oral lesions (cold sores)
- HSV-2 is primarily associated with genital herpes
HSV virions contain a large double-stranded linear DNA genome within a capsid and enveloped structure. The HSV genome encodes over 70 open reading frames (ORFs). HSV infection has also been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.
